MK2 Golf Gti, Reluctant starter from cold

I have a MK2 Golf Gti, 8v, 1990. It runs perfectly and before i took it around Europe for a week i could leave it standing for a week or so and it would start with the first turn of the key.

I covered 1400 miles in a week and since getting back the car has been slightly reluctant to start on the first few turns of the key. The battery is fine and there are no warning lights on the dash. What could the problem be?

I thought perhaps it could be the Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump Relay but i am sure i can hear it engage when i turn the key. Is it a case of renewing the sparks or other parts of the ignition system? Should i just have a service (haven't had one for a year)?

It does start after a few turns and then it is fine and if you come back to it the same day it will also be fine. Its a day after when it starts to be reluctant.

Any thoughts before i decide to ring the garage about it would be most appreciated.

give it a service, that should help, it could be damp in the dizzy cap / leads etc especially as the weather is getting worse and if its due a service it wont help matters!

if it's a little stuttery and hesitant until it's warmed up, it could also be the coil...

had the coil pack up on mine... you could crank it until the battery was flat, stick a set of jumps on, and she'd fire up... drive it, and restart fine, but come the next morning, nothing again!!

possibly the cold start sensor has gone so it is not fuelling for cold starts.
normally they just clip into a plastic hose adaptor by the temp gauge switch but cant remember if it is the blue or green one.
