bug chassis/body swap

well what have i done, bought a 69 bug with my heart not my head, it has loads of history and 2 owners, been off road 5 years so needs work! stripped interior and found lots of rot floor, boot, i heater channel, spare wheel well, frame head. currenyly none runner, have not looked into this yet. BUT big question here, i may have found solid refurbished chassis with running motor. my bug is a 69, the chassis i have seen is a 67, would this be a straight forward swap? any one got any experiance of this sort of swap?

does the 67 have a ball joint beam?
iirc the differences early/late chassis/bodys are the body/chassis mounts under the rear wings and id guess the front beam setup would be different for the k & l beam & ball joint beams - if you have the 2 shells im sure you could modd either to suit

Doesn't matter about the front end - all year shells fit all year pans. Problem is at the back with the body mounts. You've actually got an easy fix - the '69 body has higher body mounts than the '67 pan, so you'll need to make up a spacer. If it was the other way 'round you'd need to chop the body mounts out!

Just checking though - the list of panels you mention - some are for the body, some are for the pan. You do know that you've still got plenty of welding to do? Personally I'd repair the body and run the car on the '67 pan until you have the '69 pan rebuilt, then swap back. If the car has that much history then it'd be nice to keep it all together!

yeah i know that i have plenty of welding to do, was thinking that may be swap repair body, swap pans, refurb original pan, swap back, then the other half gets her bug and the spare pan would may be make a good base for the buggy i have thought about in the past!

decision made, i am going to refurb what i ve got, have ordered adjustable beam ( trying to convince the missus to let me drop front end) 2 floor pan halves, boot floor, heater channel, front clip section and frame head. Brother in law to help with welding, he is a welder by trade and reckons he has seen worse, trying to split floorpan/ body but according to reciepts a "vw speaclist" fitted new channel a few years ago, actually all they did was plate heater channel to floor on one side, someone did replace heater channel on other side, but seem to have used seam sealer to stick it floorpan instead of seal, oh well i reckon this is only the tip of the iceberg!!

Re: bug chassis/body swap

its been some time since i last posted on this thread, but i 've been busy. Kath,Me and brother in law have sorted all welding, 1 heater channel , 1 rear bumper mount, both pan halves, boot floor, complete frame head, 1 lower rear quater, spare wheel well, complete frame head, and varios small patchs. we also fitted a new beam, front disc brakes and refurbised rear brakes. Emilys ( cars name) body and chassis are now reunited and after bleeding her brakes (nightmare) and temp fitting drivers seat we got her started (2nd turn of key) and took her for a test run down a farm track, all went well till i got back and noticed the pool of oil under her, looks like flywheel seal has gone, probebly due to standing for several years, oh well thats a job for another day, better tell kath not to bother to much about putting the interior back in yet.
Thought things were going to well..
