gearbox engine question

Here go's

In my bay i had a standard 1600 engine and box , i have now got a 2ltr type 4 to fit . the engine and gear box fit but the old starter wont work so i have tried my mate 2ltr 4type starter and that wont fit my gear box. the bearing on the shaft of the starter is stopping it from loacting on the box . any one got any ideas . i dont want to spend any more money on this engine as ive not had it running yet.

cheers

you say the old starter wont work - what ? it doesnt work or doesnt fit?

Sounds like a Flywheel size issue to me too.
Check the diameter compared to your Type1 one.

1970's type 411 and 2A vans with a 1700 motor used 215mm (i think it was) flywheels these fit in the 12V beetle box and use the beetle starter. I fitted a 200mm clutch plate inside the 215 cover.
so may be a flywheel swap.

dont know what year your gearbox is but be aware that pre 75 and post 75 boxes have different length input shafts, they will work but after a while will mash up the engines spiggot bearing(crunching gears/hard to engage etc).
