Re: lowering a 1303 (rear)

Dropping the rear suspension on an IRS Bug is pretty much the same as a swing-axle Bug, the only problem is you can't see the torsion bar due to the shape of the spring plates.

What you must know is that there are more splines on the inner end of the torsion bar than the outer. A drop of one inner spline will give roughly a 2" drop, turning it by one outer will drop it considerably more.

Or just do what I do and fit adjustable spring plates.

yes and yes.

its essentially mark it up, pull it off or out and turn it round by the required amount of splines.

As above the inner and outer ends of the torsion bar have a different number of splines to allow fine adjustments to be made with a combination of both.

cool stuff, i think i might tackle that then when the weather gets a bit better (my garage is absoloutely packed!

whats these adjustable spring plates? is it a DIY job? im pretty good at spannerin but can weld for shit! haha

i dropped the front by 2'' but i still dont like the stance, mite have to go for the 3'' and shocks (im well annoyed that there was a full 3'' drop kit with shockers and everything on machine 7 for ages and it had been reduced to 200 quid, but i just didnt have th money at the time)

Re: lowering a 1303 (rear)

adjustable spring plates replace the existing one piece spring plates with a 2 piece design with a screw that allows you to fine tune the ride height. They are not necessary but can save alot of time and work if you want to mess about with wheels and ride heights etc.

oh and no welding required.
