Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

I personaly don't think it works on those wheels for the simple reason that alloy does not rust, it would only look right on a steely. I know you are trying to showcase your products and tallents which i am not questioning, but the subject was poorly chosen. I thought the car looked spot on before and think the "rust" has detracted from it, if you had made them look loke scabby old alloys (not unlike my BRM's) then it may have floated my boat a bit more. Again, this is only my opinion, but you did ask No denying the process works though

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

tbh dont think im totally keen. It would work (really well!) on an old beetle but it just seems a bit strange on something thats relatively new - At that sort of age its something that you perceive as a problem, not real patina.

The newbie does get a lot from the old beetle, there is a similarity. My three year old neice thought Herbie was like 'uncle Robs car'. But it is a totally different car. The feel for it is different - its a modern car and not an old style one. Nice for somethings, not so nice for others. To my mind you shouldnt age it to try to be an old one, but thats just personal opinion. Keep things moving but with a modern twist.

What does surprise me is how in a few short years they've gone from being hated to ok to discuss on a forum.

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

the point that alloy wheels dont rust is a good one, id not thought of that
but i dont think thats the issue here, for me (as ive said on an earlier thread) volkswagens arent about common sense and conformity, (we all know that).
theyre about being that little bit different, daring and owning something that makes YOU smile. and i believe these wheels tick all those boxes....
thats why it goes straight to the top of the cool wall (where fbiiburton cant reach it)

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

Thanks for all your comments , my reason for doing the alloys was beacause alloy doesnt rust and steels look crap . i just thought , new beetle , new ideas new trends and a new take on a old scene. And as far as i no , no 1 els has done this yet to a shiney set of rims , plus i wanted to show a bit of effort by leaving the rim clean . I love all the opinions honesty and the discussion it brings . cheers lads and lasses as we all know todays eye saw is tomoros trend so anything is possible lol

You had better use your climbing gear to put it up there Drew, but the rusty magnets wont hold it up long I am all for a bit of difference in styling, god knows i am sick of narrowed beams and fusch wheels, the main thing is, he asked our opinions before doing it (which i refrained from) and against many comments did it anyway, so what does that tell me. A, shut up, and B, thats how HE want's HIS car which is what matters realy

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

they dont look that bad in the pics! though the closer pics do look a little interesting.....the masking looks like it was a bit of a rush job with flat edges where it should be curved.....tho that could be the pics!

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

Its a clever effect ........ but i personally don't like it. Not that i know much about shiney and tidy cars, but i think it looked much better before.

Always nice to see something different tho

Re: retro inspired new beetle,, patina rims!!

cheers for your comments it looks like some of you get what i wanted to do with the wheels , and some of you didnt get it or just didnt like it . I took some better picks today since my looked extreamly dirty on the others. And i dont whant people thinkin im slacking on the cleaning . Some of the wheerls are rusting quicker just due to the natural proces but i didnt whant them to look to novelty to quick .
