well, im new to this site and fairly new to beetles..
ive got a '74 1303 and need money and motivation to carry on with my resto.. i bought it to use as a uni slag (to get me to and from uni this year) but then i fell in love and now its my pride & joy so everything needs doing properly.. ive currently got no wires in it and need to make a loom (but now its in the garage i dont have any space) it annoys me that i cant work on it and i dont want to loose motivation, i had the lump out in the summer, gave it the chrome dress up kit (not very euro look i know but thats what taking a wad of cash to the bugjam buys ya!) and some other bits and pieces..
if anyones got any tips for me, or can help in any way i'd appriciate it.. gunna be looking to invest some wide glass arches and some nice wheels soon!
yeh, i kinda lost intrest a couple of weeks ago, with the snow an all that but my mate at uni got a 72 1303 and its been like summer all over again, looking in the clearacne section on machine7, trying to buy anything that will bolt on! haha.. so im bang into it again and joined this to keep me entertained.. im after some glass arches (preferably flared) but it doesnt really matter if its the right price
been looking for some alloys but its friggin well hard to find some that might look good.. but my benifit is that ive got some wheel spacers/adapters that fit a 100 pcd wheel (another reason i want the flares)
other than a paint job and bolting my shit back on i think thats it.. wouldnt mind front discs but once again, im itting money barriers!
Liking your enthusiasm, keep it up it can be difficult over winter but searching for new parts always helps!
When you do get back to driving your bug about, keep and eye on engine temps (invest in a oil temp guage to be sure) as chrome tinware doesn't cool very well neither does the early style fanhousing.
Wheel choice is so difficult, there's such a range out there any many pitfalls, if you make a decision then give machine 7 a call, they are fantastically knowledgeable about wheels and fitments so should be able to tell you if they will fit.
what do you mean about the old style fan housing? is that where you can get that big fan on the back that looks like the porsce one?
i think im gunna put a set of dials on my christmas request form, i think i priced it up for 200 quid to get VDO head temp, oil tem, oil press and volts.. are these a good buy (machine 7 i think)
this is the correct later one, both will work but the later ones had flaps and internal bits to direct the air better over the heads and the oil cooler.
If you want lots of dials for the look then go for it, they are all useful, but in reality you only really need a oil temp or a cyl head temp.
All of the above is good advice. Our engine is out because one of the main oil feeds in the bearings got blocked by debris and nackered the shims and crank.
If we had an oil temp/pressure gauge it would have possibly saved a lot of work. I have a set of 3 to put in when i get the engine back now.
Also - there is a bit of a waiting list but try daymouldings for glass wings. They are the only ones that fit properly. I have a set of glass wings on the bug and they are a horrible fit, but they were cheap!
haha, i dont think my wings will fit right well then because i cant see me paying too much! my aim for this is to get it as far as i can with the money and skills i have for next summer..
deffo wanna go bugjam 25 in it, went in the summer and it was awesome, never seen santa pod from that angle before! haha.. i rekon alloys and have it standing how i like it and thats probably as far as ill get, then when i get out of uni and get a job ill have some cash to throw at it
only bastard is that i cant work on it when the weathers like this, its in the garage but no room to get at it
hi there , im sure you will get the car done the way you want it soon , im in the same boat and times are hard but its coming along by the looks of the pics , cheers graeme
cheers, it seems like winters a bad time for every one.. i made the mistake of building the engine through summer.. should have done the stuff i need to do outside.. but its rite, live and learn!
