Engine size dilema...HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

Hi there,

Last year i bought a 1969 1300 beetle- the guy I bought it off told me that the 1300cc engine had been replaced in the past with a 1200cc engine. As I was new to the scene I was not clued up on engine codes etc and took his word for it. The car had MOT and Tax etc and was a runner...or so I thought.
The MOT expired a few months later and 5 red pages of failure followed - basically it was a death trap and it has been off the raod since.
Me and my dad are now undertaking a massive restoration project, not good when I have got a 6 week old son, but hey it may be done when he is 18 (or 28!!!)

Anyway, the reason I have started this thread is because I think the engine code on the blockk has been tampered with, it looks like a D, bit it has a line through it so it looks a bit like a B, but it isn't cuz the letter looks deformed, it could be a H or an F. The engine is single port.

I have loked at the part numbers in the cylinder heads and they correspond to ones fitted to 1300cc engines. The carb is a 30 PICT 2 (which I don't think was fited to a 1200cc).

Can anyone tell me if the cylinder heads of a 1300cc engine with even fit to a 1200cc?

Is there any other way I can tell FOR SURE what size engine I ave without having to dismantle it and start measuring piston sizes etc???

Many thanks to anyone who can help - when it is on the road I will come to a show, hunt you down and get you a pint - I PROMISE ...this is really doing my head in.

the only way to tell for sure is to strip it - the heads or case may have been modified to suit the other parts -
why do you want to know?

the obvious difference between a 1200 and a 1300/1500/1600 is the width between the exhaust ports 1200's are narrower as they have a shorter stroke. Couldn't tell you the measurements off the top of my head tho, but someone with a 1200 might
