Exterior
Re-sprayed with colour coded bumper and mirrors. Genuine VW Golf MkV GTI (BBS) 17” Monza Alloy Wheels with good tyres. Lowered 65mm front and 60mm rear. Flush mount 240v hookup
Paddy Hopkirk roof rack (this is bolted on and off, but no holes are left in the roof - more secure than the clip on types, and looks neater too. Spaced to take boards from about 5.5 feet up.). Whitter tow bar and single electric point
Engine is a straight 1.9D. Drives really well, I have a 50 mile commute and the van is my daily driver. It's never let me down, and although I do most of the servicing myself, I have loads of receipts for service items etc...
Cab
Single Drivers seat and Dual Passenger seat, with a black carpet over mat. Motorola Bluetooth handsfree kit which is wired through the stereo. Holders for mobile phone and iPod (other mp3 devices are available!!). Pioneer face of CD player standard dash speakers, with 6x9’s in the doors wired through a 150W amplifier.
Rear
Fully insulted, carpeted and floor covered in vinyl. Units down the RHS, with full height wardrobe and loads of stroage. Rock and roll bed, with red cover, and loads of storage space underneath. Front on the bed flips to allow surf boards/canoes etc to be stored underneath during the night. There's also an island table, with recessed base and chrome leg.
There's a two burner hob, and a sink/drainer unit. These are both Smev. Micro switch tank and submersible pump, fresh and waste tanks. The cooker is piped with copper piping, with a couple of vents in the unit.
4 LED battery operated spot lights on the roof (as well as the original roof lights). Limo tint on the rear doors.
The plug that is in the wardrobe unit is on an extension, and can either be plugged into the mains hook up or, run off an inverter attached to a leisure battery. Ideal for powering a laptop etc.
I bought the van standard and started converting to use for my weekends surfing. The mileage is only approx due to the fact I am still using it.
The van is generally clean and tidy and drives nicely. For those of you worried about the fact it’s only a 1.9D, don’t be. It’ll cruise all day long at 80mph and returns good fuel economy for the type of vehicle. And besides, it’s not about the speed, it’s all about the look!! As I said, I use this van daily (I have 50 mile round trip commute for work), and it’s spot on.
Despite all the work, the van is 13 years old, so there are a couple of points I would like to raise;
A bit of rust on the wheel arches is coming through, and a couple of other minor spots.
Nearside rear taillight has a crack in it.
Small crack in the windscreen (I'm trying to sort this out)
Roof lining has a hole in it at the rear
Some curbing on a couple of the wheels
