hi everyone.
we are new to this whole thing and need help desperatly. im danielle and my huband is craig we are 28 and 34, we have been married 9 years and have a 6 year old and a 4 month old. at the moment we dont own any vw's and are trying really hard to change that. basically the plan is to test the water of restoration with a bug, craig works at a place in cov that rectifies london double deckers, so our facilities are pretty good as the boss is his cousin, who has nearly finished his own bay. the problem is getting a bug, we dont have mega money to spare around 800- 1000, but they sell so fast, pleaaaase help, anyone let me know what you have!!!!
We have been wanting to do this for a long time but have only just decided to take the plunge due to having a family etc. at the moment we have a 2001 3 series bmw. we are hoping if all goes well with the bug, as soon as it sorted and reliable, the bm is going up for sale and we will then buy a bus/camper to restore. (if all goes well). we really excited, its something we have wanted to do for a long time. we are also planning on emigrating to new zealand, so will take the bug and bus ( if we ever get them), will be fab.
so again, any help would be much appreciated.
Location: Coventry. A nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there!

Re: help needed!
Hi and welcome guys! Best thing you can do is get your arses down to the Flat Four Fanatics meet at the Griffin tonight. I'll be there in my Volkstorque top so you'll easily recognise me.
I'm afraid £1000 is not much at all for a reliable Bug, best thing to do is look for a late Bug i.e. not tax exempt, and preferably a 1302 or 1303 as they're less desirable and therefore cheaper. Last year I got a LHD 1303 for £400 with 9 months mot so it is possible though.

Thanks for that we will see what we can do. i understand its not a lot, i wish we had more available, could possibly push it to 1700 max in a couple of weeks. but i dont want something reliable to buy. it dont even have to be running, i have a mate who can do a truck pick up for me for a £1 a mile, so as long as its not over 100 miles away i would be interested. im just after something that has a good chassis, not too much welding work, as we will be stripping the whole thing apart, rebuilding the engine from scratch, replacing panels needed, re-upholtering, respraying etc. i would be grateful if anyone could let me know points to look out for that would be beyond repair, was told the main thing is a good floor? at the end of the day, eventually it will my main car for daily use for my children (school runs etc) so want something that can be made safe more than anything.
Where abouts in nuneaton are you?
If you fancy a trek over to bulkington I can show you what to look for on a bug if that'd help.
Actually thinking about it - would lhd be a problem? (easy to convert). A mate mentioned selling hers last w/e. Had complete restoration about 6 years back, & a respray green, 1974 I think. Last time I saw it the wings were looking a bit scabby but that was about a year ago. Has mot till april or thereabouts. £750ish I think she said.
Selling because she has a new car and the bug doesn't get used. She lives in coventry. Can get her phone no if that helps
cheers
steve
that would be fantastic if you could find out, we keep getting pipped at the post. lhd not a massive problem, its just me i have never driven one. craig has though.
thanks very much

piece of advice on this bit, i wouldn't bother!!
from what i've read it is a major ballache, as they don't like old vehicles being imported, so if thats your long term aim, sell them first and get one when you get there
oh, welcome to vt

ok, will get hold of her. She hasn't advertised it anywhere yet.
lhd - rhd is pretty easy tbh - 2 bits on the dash, move the column tube in the bulkhead and the rest is bolt on and extending the electrics for the column switches
thanks for the advise, it was just a thought, it wasnt somthing we had looked into yet, so had no idea it would be difficult. probably sell them then and see about buying another over there. thanks for the welome too.
