who's online ???

I know its for the figures etc, but for us 'users' its nice to know who is actually online !

It used to be 10 mins IIRC , but now it seems like hours !

I read a post and see the user is still online ... but that might not be the case by a considerable time period !

any chance of getting it back to realistic timescales ???

Cheers

Rich

Think it's set to an hour which is the maximum IIRC!

There's a good reason for it as well!

and it makes a lot of difference!

In a word, nope.

In a few words, there's not any planned change for the session timeouts to be changed.

Your asessments of previous timescales, current timescales and reasons behind it are all pretty poor i'm afraid.

It's never been set at 10 mins. Default for the software is 15 mins. VT is currently set to 45 mins. It's been set like that since April so can't be that unbearable for you to have only just posted

Some of the reasons for it's use include making the forum come across as busier for people browsing through (encourages more users to join), allows longer for reading big threads if a user is signed in without the remember me box ticked (stops the session timing out and needing to sign back in if the page hasn't changed for 15 mins), effectivly less server usage needed to handle longer expiring sessions than repeated shorter sessions.

Seeing a site with only a few numbers online tends to have a negative effect in that people only come for a glance and not to post. The end result of that scenario is that the site closes.

It's not a case of doing it for the figures. If it were about 'the figures' then i'd have packed this place in long ago as it doesn't have the potential to become massive. It's site based on a niche with a localised membership. That limits it's size to begin with. It's about keeping the site active and open.

Do you recommend they're changed on other sites ? I know there's a few places with longer/similar session timeouts.

When you set up your own site Rich you can do what you want

Apologies for a blunt'ish reply but it narks me when people tell me how to run mine

P.S. here's the last time it was mentioned --> how fkin many

To offer a couple of alternatives.

It's easy enough to remove the extra fields from the who's online bit even to the extent of just being able to see the username.
Could even go as far as to disallowing the facility altogether.

Would those be any good ?

Wouldn't need to be watching what people were doing then lol.

Not sure it was a criticism as such, more wanting to know which members are actively online at one specific time (bit like msn messenger i imagine) but i dont pretend to know how these things work and the site has been great for me so top work Roady

Tis easy and has always been the same.

In the Who's Online window you get the following display

In the username column it shows their 'Last Activity' time. If that's within a few minutes then chances are they're still online. If it's upping towards half an hour or 45 mins then they've probably left the computer.

If a user clicks the logout button when they've finished then they are taken straight off the online list as the session is manually cancelled.

I personally took it that way down to the way bits were worded
