golf mk3 engine code

simple question where can the engine number/code be found as need to buy a new clutch and want to make sure i get the right 1

The only numbers i can see are just underneath the head stamped into the block but they dont seem to relate to anything just need to know what series engine it is

Two places. Look on top of the timing belt cover. There is a bar code on it, on there is your three letter engine code.

If not and you have the service history book, you will have the original manufacturers label in the front. Its on there

Also if you given GSF your registration now they can find the engine code
