Re: It won't bloody start................

Regularly serviced points and condensor are as reliable as electronic ignition.

In my opinion

Re: It won't bloody start................

Ive used both systems electronic ignition and good old points never had a problem with either ! they say electronic ignition is a fit and forget system ! but i still used to check the timing on it every now and again and it did slightly go adrift but that was propbably to do with the valve clearances being adjusted !! im back on points and conderser and as above as part of a regular service they shouldnt cause you any grief .
if you do go down the electronic route make sure you get the right one for the dizzy you have 009 or vac advance and stear clear of the empi ones as there sh*t
boils down to personal choice and ££££££££ in my opinion

Re: It won't bloody start................

There are only two reasons why it shouldn't start, fuelling or ignition.
You have already ruled fuelling out of the equation, so it must be down to ignition.
It could be any one of a number of things.
As fas as I can see, nobody has yet recommended checking the inside of the dizzy cap for damp. Simply pop off the cap, wipe it round with a tissue, after visually looking at it, and get rid of any moisture. Sparks will always try to take the easiest oute to earth, and will arc out inside the cap. Whilst you are at it, check the cap for cracks.
With the cap off, pull off the rotor arm, and give it a clean. This is normally done by wiping it on a tyre, to get rid of any deposits. Check the centre terminal of the dizzy cap is free as well.
Visually check to see if you have got a points gap. Easiest way is put car on flat surface, handbrake off, in 4th gear, and roll it a bit. You should be able to see points open and close.

If all that fails, pull a plug lead off, using a spare plug (or pull one from engine) check to see you have spark at all plug leads.

Also check you have good earth from battery to block, and battery to body.
